Corae Young has been named LifeStyles of Maryland’s Chief Operating Officer.
The promotion is a recognition of Young’s vital role within the organization and the latest milestone in her tenure with LifeStyles, which began in 2005 as a temporary fill-in while the receptionist was on vacation.
Young remained with LifeStyles because she realized the difference she could make — and because LifeStyle CEO Sandy Washington recognized the potential that Young brought to the organization.
“On June 28, 2005, Corae came to help out at LifeStyles for a week or so,” Washington said. “Eighteen years later, she has become second-in-command and an integral part of LifeStyles.”
Young has held many positions at LifeStyles, taking the opportunity to learn new skills and perspectives along the way. Today, she excels at drafting policies and procedures, supporting grant writing and program implementation efforts, partner development, and supporting the administrative and Human Resources functions of the agency.
“I’m excited to continue my journey with LifeStyles,” Young said. “I have always wanted to pour into the community where I was born and raised, and serving at LifeStyles allows me to continue to fulfill my purpose. I’m grateful and look forward to more programs the agency will be able to provide in Southern Maryland!”
LifeStyles’ mission is to provide compassionate programs and services that meet the needs of those who are underserved in our community, resulting in Help, Hope and Transformation. Young is a motivated, focused and detail-oriented leader who thrives when asked to take a grand vision and develop a roadmap to reach the ultimate destination.
In that way, she and Washington have developed a collaborative relationship because their skills complement each other so well.
Washington’s mentorship has played a key role in Young’s ascension to a top leadership position. Young proved to be a quick learner, and her own personality and perspectives have been invaluable.
“She was groomed for this,” Washington said. “Everywhere I went, I had her shadow me.”
After meetings, Washington took Young aside and asked, “What did you see? What did you hear?”
Young would describe her impressions of the meeting and those involved. Washington would respond by sharing her own insights.
“After a while, if she was in the room, I knew the organization was well represented,” Washington said. “Corae’s knowledge, skills, and, most of all, her loyalty, made this the right decision.”
