LifeStyles of Maryland has appointed Richard E. Cook, Jr., MD, MPH, MBA, as the organization\u2019s first volunteer Medical Director, establishing a new source of physician leadership and medical guidance to support individuals and families experiencing homelessness and other significant social and economic vulnerabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this role, Dr. Cook will volunteer his time and expertise as a clinical resource to LifeStyles leadership and staff on health-related policies, procedures, community health initiatives, grants and appropriate medical referrals. He may also assist the organization in identifying pathways to care for individuals with significant or complex medical needs, particularly those who are uninsured, medically underserved, experiencing homelessness or otherwise at risk of falling through gaps in the healthcare system.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Cook understands that the best way to connect people with healthcare is to show them what\u2019s available and then help them navigate barriers and find the right resources so they can receive care with dignity,\u201d said Sandy Washington, Chief Executive Officer of LifeStyles of Maryland. \u201cHis medical expertise, longstanding relationship with LifeStyles and genuine commitment to the people we serve make him the perfect person for this role.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Cook has worked alongside LifeStyles for nearly a decade and has seen firsthand the organization\u2019s commitment to serving people facing some of the community\u2019s most difficult circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat has always impressed me most about LifeStyles is its willingness to roll up its sleeves and do the difficult work that too often no one else steps forward to do,\u201d said Dr. Cook. \u201cThat is precisely why I am honored to join their efforts and offer my medical services. The Medical Director position is primarily an administrative and advisory role. It\u2019s intended to help facilitate access to appropriate healthcare. It does not establish an ongoing physician-patient relationship or replace emergency, primary or specialty medical care.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Cook is affiliated with Cook & Siu, LLC, and is board certified in internal medicine. The annual Point-in-Time Homeless Survey began across Southern Maryland on Wednesday, part of a large, nationwide effort that attempts to quantify the numbers of sheltered and unsheltered individuals and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its Continuum of Care (CoC) application for homelessness funding, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that jurisdictions across the nation conduct a statistically reliable and unduplicated count of the homeless for one overnight period during the last 10 days of January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LifeStyles of Maryland is helping lead the effort in Southern Maryland. Roughly 50 volunteers and staff members will fan out across the region to conduct the survey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the goal is to provide a snapshot of the homeless in our community, LifeStyles takes it a step further by providing access to resources and distributing items to help them sustain the weather as well as providing information and encouraging individuals to access shelter and housing services. LifeStyles will also work with local departments of social services to provide shelter for those who seek it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
