But he had a job, and so those two items kept him tethered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would wrap my sleeping bag and walk from Waldorf to Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton,\u201d Hill said. \u201cBy the time I\u2019d get back, raccoons and things were running in the woods. I had my backpack because I couldn\u2019t sleep at night without it. That was my lifeline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Hill is working and rebuilding his life. With the help of LifeStyles and a growing community of supporters, he\u2019s beginning to see a future again. But the road that brought him here was long, cold and often lonely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"From the Streets to Stability: Kevin Hill&#039;s Journey Back\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7OQo6lNkQow?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>When Life Begins to Unravel<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill had once built what many people consider a stable life. He was married and had six children. He held an HVAC license and a Cadillac.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But life began to shift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy marriage wasn\u2019t going well,\u201d he said. \u201cI needed some mental help. I started falling into depression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a workplace conflict cost him his job, Hill attempted to rebuild through delivery work. The schedule was grueling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI worked from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.,\u201d he said. \u201cNo social life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the long hours, the business expenses kept piling up \u2014 rent, insurance, truck payments, workers&#8217; insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon, everything collapsed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo job, still got to pay rent, still got to pay the truck note,\u201d Hill said. \u201cThe landlord said they\u2019d give me a week or two. I said no \u2014 I\u2019ll pack my stuff up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Five Months at a Bus Stop<\/b><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_12100\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12100\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lifestylesofmd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Hill-Sleeping-Bag.png?resize=350%2C231&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"350\" height=\"231\" alt=\"A man in a hoodie and jeans stands in a small kitchen area near a table with a chair stacked with beige cushions and a vase, reflecting on LifeStyles Congressional Funding.\" class=\"wp-image-12100 size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kevin Hill points to the sleeping bag that kept him warm on the coldest nights.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hill spent five months sleeping near a bus stop on Benning Road in Southeast Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFriends abandoned me,\u201d he said. \u201cI was on my own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He tried reaching out to family. His mother was ill and unable to help. She passed away within a few months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grief piled on top of homelessness and hunger. Survival became his sole, daily focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShelters are full,\u201d he said. \u201cNo food stamps. No health insurance. Mental issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill recognized his perilous situation, knew how the story ended for so many others who found themselves living just like him. But he made himself a promise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will never give up,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll strive to do better from day to day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Searching for Work \u2014 and Hope<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, Hill made his way from D.C. to Southern Maryland. Each morning, he\u2019d wash up, put on his best clothes and then, carrying his backpack and sleeping bag, he\u2019d walk miles along US-301 searching for work, imploring businesses, one by one, for a chance to fill out a job application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey would look at me funny,\u201d he said. \u201cThey put me in a box. I would put in the application. They would throw it into the trash.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in the freezing cold, Hill refused to panhandle, refused to steal. Some nights were almost unbearable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was so cold,\u201d Hill said. \u201cI knew if I went to sleep, I might not wake up. But God wouldn\u2019t let me go to sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A Turning Point<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One day, something unexpected appeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLifeStyles popped up on my phone,\u201d Hill said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That moment changed everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff directed him to the Waldorf West Library on Smallwood Drive, where each Friday the homeless are invited for free showers and a chance to reset. There, he could get out of the cold and access basic services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was encouraged to visit the LifeStyles Center in White Plains, where a Homeless Day program offers daily access to vital services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He met Debra Collins, a longtime supporter and staff member of LifeStyles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis doesn\u2019t seem like this is for you,\u201d Debra told him. \u201cWhen you come here, you\u2019re always sitting at the computer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m applying for jobs,\u201d he responded<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His determination was undeniable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI applied for over 74 jobs in one day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Compassion When It Was Needed Most<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LifeStyles staff stepped in immediately to help stabilize Hill\u2019s situation, first putting him up in a hotel and providing $25 gift cards to help him with basic necessities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey put me in a hotel for a day,\u201d he said. \u201cThen they came back and put me in for another day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organization also provided basic necessities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI bought bread and bologna,\u201d Hill said, \u201cso I could get some energy back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with that support, Hill remained determined to regain independence. He purchased a tent and tried to manage on his own again. The path back to a normal life would not be that easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomebody stole my tent,\u201d Hill said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, he kept moving forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Power of Community<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LifeStyles staff continued to stand beside him, first providing additional nights in a hotel after his tent was stolen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, a game-changer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LifeStyles CEO Sandy Washington had heard Hill\u2019s story and was impressed by Hill\u2019s tenacity in his quest for independence and sustainability, particularly his willingness to walk endless miles in search of work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One day, while meeting with Marilyn Steele \u2014 who along with her husband, Mark, owns Oasis Fresh Foods Market in Indian Head \u2014 Washington had an idea. She told Steele about Hill and vouched for his character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey offered me a job,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve been working for them for two and a half months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the work was new, Hill embraced the opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMark is teaching me another trade,\u201d Hill said. \u201cButchering, packing meat, store codes \u2014 I\u2019m learning while I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His employers also began preparing housing for him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey said, \u2018We have an apartment we\u2019re fixing up for you,\u2019\u201d Hill recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Hill has stable shelter and steady work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a struggle,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I get up and push on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Looking Toward the Future<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill is now focused on rebuilding his life step by step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m eating every day,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m grateful for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He hopes to regain his driver\u2019s license, continue working and eventually purchase a home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But his vision goes beyond himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve grown attached to some of the homeless people,\u201d Hill said. \u201cI want to help them after I get my CDL and buy a home and put rooms in there for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He knows firsthand how difficult life on the streets can be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was rough and cold out there,\u201d Hill said. \u201cThere were times I wanted to close my eyes and not wake up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But today, he carries a new outlook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to be where I am now,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no looking back for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kevin\u2019s story is one of many \u2014 each different, each deeply human, each a reminder of what\u2019s possible when someone is given a chance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill credits the compassion of the LifeStyles team for helping him survive his darkest days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLifeStyles are the most caring people I know,\u201d Hill said. \u201cThose people helped me. They made sure I ate and had shelter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Hill, their support meant everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWords can\u2019t say enough,\u201d he said. \u201cMe saying thank you isn\u2019t powerful enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, he hopes to repay that kindness through action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have to give back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_video _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_video][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Desde dormir a la intemperie con una mochila a cuestas hasta reconstruir su vida, la historia de Kevin Hill es un poderoso testimonio de resiliencia, esperanza y del impacto del apoyo compasivo de LifeStyles of Maryland.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":12099,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The annual Point-in-Time Homeless Survey began across Southern Maryland on Wednesday, part of a large, nationwide effort that attempts to quantify the numbers of sheltered and unsheltered individuals and families.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As part of its Continuum of Care (CoC) application for homelessness funding, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that jurisdictions across the nation conduct a statistically reliable and unduplicated count of the homeless for one overnight period during the last 10 days of January.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>LifeStyles of Maryland is helping lead the effort in Southern Maryland. Roughly 50 volunteers and staff members will fan out across the region to conduct the survey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>While the goal is to provide a snapshot of the homeless in our community, LifeStyles takes it a step further by providing access to resources and distributing items to help them sustain the weather as well as providing information and encouraging individuals to access shelter and housing services. LifeStyles will also work with local departments of social services to provide shelter for those who seek it.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The results of the survey are used to:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Understand changes in trends among homeless populations;<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Adjust the types of programs and services available according to need in order to use resources as efficiently as possible;<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Justify requests for additional resources and\/or programming modifications;<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Comply with reporting requirements from HUD, other
