Among the crowd, Charlotte Brown, an 11-year old volunteer and advocate to end homelessness, patiently waits for two special guests, Rep. Steny Hoyer and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 20px 20px;\">\n  <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" \n          src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O_RO_ErdU7c?si=AFtGzJfXmCYJFCDk\" \n          title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" \n          allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" \n          referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" \n          allowfullscreen><br \/>\n  <\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started helping LifeStyles when I was four years old, with my grandparents. I\u2019ve been helping ever since,\u201d Charlotte shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She recently won the Junior American Citizens award at the state and local level for her work highlighting the efforts of LifeStyles, including its Walk to End Homelessness. She is now competing at the regional level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlotte represents generations of service. She was introduced to community service by her grandmother, Linda Dent Mitchell, a LifeStyles friend and volunteer of over 20 years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCharlotte was taken by the number of homeless school-aged children and wanted to do something about that this year. In the past, she and her sister collected donations, Christmas presents\u2026 but Charlotte went all out this year. She wanted to bring attention to the homeless children in the tri-county,\u201d Dent Mitchell said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On this day, Charlotte and her grandmother stand with LifeStyles Foundation as they receive state officials, Rep. Steny Hoyer (MD-05) and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D.-Md, for a tour of the headquarters facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility tour includes Rosemary\u2019s Closet, a food pantry, a pantry for essentials such as toiletries and tents, staff, volunteer, and intern offices and a point of oversight for all LifeStyles facilities where unhoused individuals come for a clean, safe place to rest and rebuild.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also waiting with excitement is Jailah Hill, Fordham University graduate student and intern at LifeStyles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow I pay attention more to politics and policies and understand how we can serve marginalized groups. This opportunity is definitely a passion of mine,\u201d Jailah explained the lessons she\u2019s learned as an intern. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at the entire person, your mental wellbeing and improving your quality of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LifeStyles has a legacy of giving back\u2014not only through community service but by training generations to serve and build our community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlotte greets the honored guests as Rep. Steny Hoyer (MD-05) (MD-05) and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D.-Md, enter the main doors, where many individuals and families who have been marginalized have often come for support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are welcomed with warmth and familiarity by Sandy Washington, CEO of LifeStyles of Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tour is informal and personal. Congressman Hoyer shares friendly stories and personal insights, emphasizing the importance of service and hospitality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI tell people that work the front desk\u2026 people are going to think about LifeStyles based on your reaction. Smile and be welcoming and helpful\u2014they\u2019ll think LifeStyles is terrific. If you\u2019re grumpy, they\u2019ll think, oh, they don\u2019t care about me. Yours is one of the most important roles in this place,\u201d Rep. Hoyer said to the front desk receptionist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator Alsobrooks followed the tour intently, studying the impact of the LifeStyles movement. They walk through the pantry, past donated goods, and through the transportation areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe do three and are working on four routes to help the community to and from employment,\u201d Dwayne Bydume, transportation manager shares about transportation services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As they walk past a storage room for water, Washington adds, \u201cWe store water and take water to Nanjemoy\u2014people don\u2019t have indoor plumbing in Nanjemoy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tour ends in the conference room, where the group gathers to hear the insight that would follow from Mrs. Washington, Rep. Hoyer, Sen. Alsobrooks and board members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LifeStyles has remained consistent through political changes over the past 29 years. While Mrs. Washington shared that she didn\u2019t initially think the political season would impact the work, she reveals the toll of funding freezes. \u201cWe received a notification about a grant\u2014CDC funding that ended on March 24th. We still had $122,000 in that grant. People were still working, but we couldn\u2019t bill for anything past March 24th.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI went to pay the rent and it said it shut down. My heart dropped. A moment of depression that I didn\u2019t think I would pull out of,\u201d she confessed. \u201cWe\u2019re standing in front of a brick wall and a charging truck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Board members encourage Mrs. Washington that they will weather the storm. Yet the impact of the rocky economic climate is not lost on Hoyer or Alsobrooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe people that receive services are American people. Some supported the administration and some didn\u2019t\u2014we are harming everyday people,\u201d said Sen. Alsobrooks. \u201cThere is a concerted effort to attack the middle class. The cruelty has been really painful\u2026 and it\u2019s not sustainable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rep. Hoyer adds, \u201cThe American people have this story that there\u2019s a lot of waste\u2026 but they\u2019re not seeing the hungry child or the homeless. Or the child in school that doesn\u2019t have a nutritional breakfast\u2026 If they knew the real life impact of these cuts\u2026 But for this program, this family would be going hungry or homeless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs. Washington closes the conversation with honesty and urgency. \u201cThe people we serve\u2014that\u2019s where our story is. Tell our story about the real people being hurt every single day\u2026 the person that came here today for food, that court battle is not putting food on the table. The person trying to stop an eviction, that court battle is not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LifeStyles continues to build regardless of political and economic change. Because the purpose is not politics\u2014it\u2019s people. So that someone will have a place to sleep. Roughly 50 volunteers and staff members will fan out across the region to conduct the survey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>While the goal is to provide a snapshot of the homeless in our community, LifeStyles takes it a step further by providing access to resources and distributing items to help them sustain the weather as well as providing information and encouraging individuals to access shelter and housing services.
