Ray Short didn\u2019t just serve on LifeStyles\u2019 Board of Directors.<\/span><\/p>\n

He served with his hands, his time and his heart. Wherever he saw a need.<\/span><\/p>\n

From 2018 to 2023, Ray was a steady presence on our board, helping to guide the mission and represent LifeStyles at speaking engagements and outreach events. But it\u2019s the work he\u2019s done behind the scenes that left a lasting mark.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Every other week, Ray rolled up his sleeves and tended to the grounds at four of our shelter locations, along with Southern Crossing, our newest transitional housing site. His service went far beyond mowing lawns. He laid pavers. Spread gravel. Trimmed, cleaned and repaired. And he offered expert input on the design and development of Southern Crossing, a space that now provides stability and hope to individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ray helped shape spaces into safe, welcoming environments for those we serve. His eye for detail and care for the people who would one day walk those paths is what made his work so impactful.<\/span><\/p>\n

His dedication reminds us that care doesn\u2019t always come with a clipboard or a title. Sometimes, it comes with a shovel and a vision.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ray brings a sense of pride and dignity to every project he\u2019s touched. He never seeks credit or attention. He simply shows up \u2014 consistently, humbly and wholeheartedly \u2014 and does the work that needed to be done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether helping with landscaping or representing LifeStyles in the community, Ray has always led by example.<\/span><\/p>\n

His impact is visible in every path made smoother, every lawn well-kept, every shelter entrance made more beautiful. It\u2019s in the example he sets for all of us.<\/span><\/p>\n

The annual Point-in-Time Homeless Survey began across Southern Maryland on Wednesday, part of a large, nationwide effort that attempts to quantify the numbers of sheltered and unsheltered individuals and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its Continuum of Care (CoC) application for homelessness funding, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that jurisdictions across the nation conduct a statistically reliable and unduplicated count of the homeless for one overnight period during the last 10 days of January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LifeStyles of Maryland is helping lead the effort in Southern Maryland. Roughly 50 volunteers and staff members will fan out across the region to conduct the survey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the goal is to provide a snapshot of the homeless in our community, LifeStyles takes it a step further by providing access to resources and distributing items to help them sustain the weather as well as providing information and encouraging individuals to access shelter and housing services. LifeStyles will also work with local departments of social services to provide shelter for those who seek it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
