We believed it was possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a hot June day in Newburg, we celebrated the Grand Opening of something extraordinary \u2014 the North Wing at Southern Crossing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What was once the abandoned, drug-ridden White House Motel on US-301 now stands as a place of dignity, safety and second chances.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"This isn\u2019t just transitional housing. It\u2019s a launchpad for transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Southern Crossing offers independent living for people experiencing homelessness or teetering on the edge. It\u2019s the first of its kind in Southern Maryland. The 10 private units in the North Wing \u2014 and more on the way \u2014 represent a place where residents can live, learn and grow with the support they need to move forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis project is not only to serve those who are homeless, but also those who are just barely making it,\u201d Chief Operating Officer Corae Young. \u201cWe\u2019re giving them an opportunity to rebirth themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A Place Where People Rise<\/b><\/h3>\n

The celebration brought together local leaders, partners and dozens of our supporters. Some have walked alongside us for years. Others joined us for the first time as Southern Crossing took shape. But all believed in the same thing, that we can build a community where everyone matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

LifeStyles CEO Sandy Washington shared the journey with emotion and truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis motel was empty, broken, drug-infested, and everyone thought it was no good,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople just discarded it, the same way they discard so many of the people we serve. \u2026 I\u2019m telling you, put a little investment in people. They\u2019re worth it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We saw potential where others saw decay.<\/span><\/p>\n

We saw future tenants who could rise \u2014 if only given a fair shot.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ribbon-cutting was more than a ceremony. It was a declaration: Hope lives here now.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the community showed up in full force to support it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kathy Guzman, President of the Charles County Chamber of Commerce, shared her own powerful story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTwenty-five years ago, I came to LifeStyles for help,\u201d she said. \u201cThe evolution of what a person can become, I\u2019m living proof.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Congressman Steny Hoyer\u2019s office presented us with an American flag to fly at Southern Crossing. Charles County Commissioners President Reuben Collins gave us the official county seal, a symbol of shared purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

And our friends at Wells Fargo took our breath away with a surprise announcement of an additional $85,000 in funding to support this work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Built with Love, Backed by Community<\/b><\/h3>\n

We didn\u2019t do this alone. It took bold vision and tireless commitment from so many.<\/span><\/p>\n

Washington thanked many of the businesses that have made an impact at Southern Crossing \u2014 including The Wills Group, Wells Fargo, Chick-fil-A, SE Davis Construction and so many others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their support turned this project into a reality. Their belief in our mission fuels what comes next.<\/span><\/p>\n

Southern Crossing will do more than house people. It will teach life skills, restore confidence, and prepare residents for the next step toward permanent housing. Through our Coordinated Entry System, we\u2019ll help each person or family get the services and guidance they need to succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Young said, \u201cOur goal is to provide a learning environment in a supportive manner, while also providing households the dignity and respect they deserve to live autonomously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Because dignity changes everything.<\/span><\/p>\n

The North Wing at Southern Crossing is open. Residents will move in soon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Southern Crossing is alive with promise, with community, with hope.<\/span><\/p>\n

The annual Point-in-Time Homeless Survey began across Southern Maryland on Wednesday, part of a large, nationwide effort that attempts to quantify the numbers of sheltered and unsheltered individuals and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its Continuum of Care (CoC) application for homelessness funding, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that jurisdictions across the nation conduct a statistically reliable and unduplicated count of the homeless for one overnight period during the last 10 days of January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LifeStyles of Maryland is helping lead the effort in Southern Maryland. Roughly 50 volunteers and staff members will fan out across the region to conduct the survey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the goal is to provide a snapshot of the homeless in our community, LifeStyles takes it a step further by providing access to resources and distributing items to help them sustain the weather as well as providing information and encouraging individuals to access shelter and housing services. LifeStyles will also work with local departments of social services to provide shelter for those who seek it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results of the survey are used to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Understand changes in trends among homeless populations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Adjust the types of programs and services available according to need in order to use resources as efficiently as possible;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Justify requests for additional resources and\/or programming modifications;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Comply with reporting requirements from HUD, other funders, and local stakeholders;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Raise public awareness about the issue of homelessness; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n
